10 & 11 september 2021 - ancient theatre of demetrias

A modern take on the timeless tragedy of Prometheus Bound. A classic form reimagined through neoclassical dance.

”And through the darkness, light emerged. A gift or a curse? Decision or crash?”

Prometheus knows his fate, yet in a bold act of self-sacrifice and love, he defies the authority of Zeus. Despite his titanic immortality, he sides with mortals, challenging the cosmic order—and suffers severe punishment. Guided by unwavering conviction, he embraces his endless exile. But what lies beyond his fate?

In his first full-scale dance production, Stefanos Dimoulas takes on the profound tragedy of Aeschylus to create Titan Prometheus. Presented as part of the ALL OF GREECE ONE CULTURE – Program 2021 by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, this unique performance explores the timeless trials of the classic story through a modern lens at the Ancient Theater of Demetrias, just outside Volos city center, for two unforgettable evenings.

The characters confront authority and social stereotypes, discovering their strengths through the language of dance. Drawing from one of the greatest tragedies of all time, they navigate memories and experiences that blur the line between reality and mythology.

With intense aesthetic and emotional shifts, the production immerses viewers in a dark, mythical world. Bold staging and haunting imagery confront contemporary themes, provoking powerful questions.

  • Are the brave truly justified in their sacrifice?

  • Is giving oneself for the common good worth the cost?

  • Does hope always remain until the very end?

  • Must the hero conform to society’s demands—strength, grace, beauty, intelligence, or even being attracted only to the opposite sex—to be seen and accepted?

Stefanos Dimoulas choreographs Titan Prometheus inspired by the Aeschylian tragedy, blending neoclassical technique—a fusion of classical ballet with modern dance and physical theater. The performance captivates with free, harmonious movements, clean lines, and striking contrasts between dynamic speed and dramatic stillness.

For the original score of the performance, Ermis Geragidis takes an unconventional, cinematic approach, weaving dark compositions with moments of optimism that echo the Aeschylian tragedy. A rising crescendo of strings, piano, and orchestral instruments blends seamlessly with electronic processing to create an immersive, atmospheric soundscape.

The sets and costumes blend operatic grandeur with minimalist abstraction. Inspired by Dimoulas’ vision for Titan Prometheus, Ilenia Douladiri creates a universe reflecting the titan’s agony, gloom, and muscular tension—crafting poetic, visually striking images that balance elegance with realism.

The Ancient Theater of Demetrias, a jewel of Hellenistic culture, becomes the otherworldly stage of Prometheus’ punishment — where classical tragedy meets a modern vision, and modern dance honors timeless tradition.

A mystagogic journey through psychological shifts, intense emotions, and the Titan’s cruel punishment, culminating in catharsis. This powerful dance performance channels electrified melodies as black pointe shoes explore the uncharted boundaries of self-sacrifice and the struggle against power.
